GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT  MOUNT KILIMANJARO

WHY CLIMB TO MOUNT KILIMANJARO?

“Kilimanjaro, by any name, is a metaphor for the compelling beauty of East Africa”

The Truth about Kilimanjaro Prices and Costs!

Many people look for a cheap Kilimanjaro climb. But if you have done some research, then you have already found that this is not possible. And you probably have also discovered that there are a wide range of prices charged for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro by different outfitters. There are more than 200 licensed operators on Mount Kilimanjaro.

First and foremost, do not make your decision based on price alone. Price should be only one component of your overall decision. High altitude trekking is not the place to shop for a cheap “deal”, nor is it the place to overpay needlessly. What you are looking for is high quality service at a reasonable price.

There are minimum expenses every Kilimanjaro operator faces, such as park fees, staff wages, food, equipment, transportation and other logistical costs. Kilimanjaro National Park entrance fees, camping/hut fees and Tanzanian taxes by far make up the biggest expense, costing over $150 per climber per day. The other significant expenses are staff wages, food, and transportation costs. Local wages amount to around $60-$120 per climber per day (depending on group size). Food costs come out to about $10-$20 per climber per day (includes food for staff). Transportation costs are about $100 per trip depending on the route. There are also costs associated with wear and tear on camping equipment and administrative costs for arranging your climb. By adding up all the daily costs listed here, you can estimate what it may cost to fund a Kilimanjaro climb on your own. So instead of asking how we can be priced so low, you should be asking how those other companies can be priced so high?

 Mount Kilimanjaro……..”The Roof of Africa”

Kilimanjaro is the one of the dormant volcano that its Africa’s tallest mountain and also is the tallest – free- standing mountain in the world rising in breathtaking isolation from the surrounding coastal scrubland- elevation around 900 metres to an imperious 5,895 metres (19,336feet). There are two main peaks; Kibo and Mawenzi. Kilimanjaro is one of the biggest volcanoes on the planet, though Mawenzi is extinct and Kibo lies dormant.

Glaciers of Kilimanjaro Mountain!

“According to recent research, the current glaciers began to form in 9700BC.One would think that with the intensely strong equatorial sun, glaciers wouldn’t exist at all on Kilimanjaro, but in fact, it is the brilliant white color of the ice that allows the glacier to survive as it reflects most of the heat. The dull black lava rock on which the glacier rests, on the other hand, does absorb the heat, so while the glacier’s surface is unaffected by the sun’s rays, the heat generated by the sunbaked rocks underneath leads to glacial melting.

As a result, the glaciers on Kilimanjaro are inherently unstable: the ice at the bottom of the glacier touching the rocks melts, the glaciers lose their ‘grip’ on the mountain and ‘overhangs ‘occur where the ice at the base has melted away, leaving just the ice at the top to survive”

Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits, a beacon for visitors from around the world. Most climbers reach the crater rim with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination. And those who reach Uhuru Point, the actual summit, or Gillman’s Point on the lip of the crater, will have earned their climbing certificates. And their memories!
